August Book Club: The Five
August 27, 2020 @ 7:30 pm
Join us for the August gathering of the Democrats Abroad book club — virtual edition!
This time, we will discuss The Five: The Lives of Jack the Ripper’s Women by Hallie Rubenhold. With this book club we aim to provide a shared reading experience and relaxed discussion space for Democrats Abroad members. Just so you know, you don’t have to have finished the book entirely to attend. Each month we have attendees who only had time to make it partway through and we welcome them! Also, this month we will choose books for September, October and November. So keep a suggestion in mind when you come, and we’ll have a vote!
The Five: The Lives of Jack the Ripper’s Women by Hallie Rubenhold
“Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. They came from Fleet Street, Knightsbridge, Wolverhampton, Sweden and Wales. They wrote ballads, ran coffee houses, lived on country estates, they breathed ink-dust from printing presses and escaped people-traffickers. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. Their murderer was never identified, but the name created for him by the press has become far more famous than any of these five women. Now, in this devastating narrative of five lives, historian Hallie Rubenhold finally sets the record straight, and gives these women back their stories.” 336 pages.
