This probably isn’t how most of us imagined spring in Berlin this year. Even as the weather warms up, please continue to stay in — we’ve got our new lineup of virtual events and ways to get involved below.
You voted in the Global Presidential Primary, now what? As promised in the last Berlin chapter email, we’ve been working on transitioning many of our events to online formats, and finding ways to do outreach to potential voters online. We’d like to hear from members both new and old what’s important to you: let us know what you’d like to see.
We’d love to connect with you at the first edition of online office hours with Berlin chair Diego Rivas this Thursday evening April 9, 2020. ►RSVP for office hours
Our monthly chapter meeting is moving online! Join our video call next week on Tuesday, April 14, 2020 from 7:30-8:30pm. ►RSVP for April Chapter Meeting
Want to take action while at home? You can be part of the phone banking campaign to call Democrats Abroad members and remind them to request absentee ballots. We’ve just stated a new campaign to reach 3000 members in Germany. There’s a training today, Tuesday April 7 at 7pm: ►RSVP for phone banking training
We’re looking forward to seeing you on the internet. Now’s the time to check in on friends and neighbors. Take care of each other!
Updates
Global Presidential Primary Results
In 180 countries where Democrats Abroad members live, almost 40,000 cast votes in the Global Primary. Here are the results:
- Senator Bernie Sanders received 23,139 votes (57.9%), resulting in 9 delegates
- Vice President Joe Biden received 9,059 (22.7%), resulting in 4 delegates.
In Germany, we had an astounding turnout: 5268 votes total, up 80% (!) from 2016. If you’re interested in more granular results, detailed vote breakdowns have been published.
Thanks to everyone who participated. Please remember, voting in the global primary doesn’t automatically register you to vote. You still need to request your absentee ballot if you haven’t done so.
Delegate to the 2020 Democratic National Convention
Delegates represent Democrats Abroad at the Democratic National Convention, which has been re-scheduled to begin August 17, 2020 in Milwaukee, WI. The deadline to declare Delegate Candidacy is April 17, 2020. You can find more details (and the submission form) on the delegate candidate briefing page.
We hope Democrats Abroad’s 2020 delegation represents the extraordinary diversity of Democrats Abroad’s members: including delegates of many backgrounds, skin colors, ages, gender identities, sexual orientations, and abilities. In order to ensure we have a diverse delegation at the convention, we need diverse candidates to run. Could that be you? Any Democrats Abroad member is eligible to run, members who identify as any of the following are especially encouraged to run: women, African American, Hispanic American, Native American, Asian American or Pacific Islander, LGBT, youth (aged 36 or younger), and those with a disability.

CARES Act FAQ
Democrats Abroad’s Taxation Taskforce has been following the Coronavirus Aid, Relief & Economy Safety Actand received many questions members about the potential impact of the aid package on Americans Abroad.
To help address the key concerns, the taskforce has put together a CARES Act FAQ. Please note, this document may change as the IRS and other government institutions share more updates. Also, Democrats Abroad does not provide personal tax advice or recommendations
